How You Can Leverage Technology for Greater Sustainability

The definition of sustainability, according to the United Nations, is “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” Originally coined in 1987, this definition has fueled businesses' efforts to work toward their own versions of sustainability, as per their service models. Let’s look at some ways you can make your own operations more sustainable.

Use the Cloud

Consider the hundreds of servers that are all being used on a daily basis with variable levels of efficiency. They will use infinitely more energy to power compared to one that has been optimized properly. Naturally, it’s more predictable from a financial standpoint to operate with the cloud in mind, as you will use less electricity as a business with no loss whatsoever in your operational efficiency.

In our opinion, if you can use the cloud for something, you should do yourself a favor and at least consider it. This will make your organization have less of an impact on the environment while also allowing for easier collaboration and accessibility of data. It’s a win-win situation for your organization and the environment.

Recycle More Often

Paperless technologies have allowed businesses to make great strides forward in their sustainability efforts, but you can take steps further by responsibly shredding and recycling documents that aren’t in use any longer. You can do something similar with old ink cartridges, properly recycling them to ensure that new ones will not be manufactured if unnecessary.

Businesses can also improve their recycling efforts by committing to recycling older electronic devices. Consider just how many hazardous materials are used to create electronic components. All of this will find its way into a landfill—as well as the water, air, and land around it—if you don’t take steps to prevent it from doing so. It can easily be prevented if you just take a moment to properly recycle your old devices.

Implement Remote Operations

Remote work is a powerhouse for sustainability, and with today’s mobile technology fueling your efforts, you can be confident that you can implement remote work in an intelligent and sustainable way. Your office will cut back on its energy costs while also eliminating a daily commute for remote workers and its emissions, further contributing to greater sustainability practices.
